21st Century Bill Pay
What do you think of when you think of bank bill pay today? Slow, cumbersome, out-of-date, not proactive; The FUSE product seeks to change that.

The Future
By taking the technology and UX of the Prism app, FUSE seeks to bring bank bill pay into the 21st century. Users will be able to link billers with credentials to see their bills and receive notifications. Payments can now be completed same-day, real-time, and are credited immediately by the biller.
Because of the Covid pandemic, banks were looking to increase revenue quickly to make-up for the closings of the retail space. Because of this, many banks wanted a faster solution than using BillGO’s APIs to improve their bill pay space.
To this end, API-driven widgets were designed to be dropped into partner-bank experiences. The UI had to be customizable using CSS to match their experience. Hence, a design was needed that both refreshed the look and feel of bill pay, all while still working in the visual confines of various bank sites. Additionally, new feature functionality had to mesh with current functionality that was not going away.
The Challenge
Meshing New & Old
The first hurdle to contend with was meshing new and old feature sets. Current bank bill pay is displayed as an alphabetical, actionable “spreadsheet” list (bottom). Problems arise when needing to highlight bills that are due (“Xfinity” would appear at the bottom when ordered A-Z).
To this end, I designed a separate “Bills Due” (top) widget that would bubble up any bills that are due. This made paying known bills much more easy and fast.
This also had the additional benefit of being able to use this Bills Due widget on the banks main account page, in order to bring bill pay into the forefront of the bank experience.
Next, I was tasked with taking proven flows from the Prism App and converting them into UI and UX that worked in banks.
This meant trimming more flashy UI portions, all will retaining the simplicity of the experience.
The final result was over 10 widgets and 45+ screens. Included was a componentized style guide that was ADA compliant.
In addition to designing the product, I was also tasked with designing and tech writing a certification guide to be used by partners who wanted to build out their own UI and UX from the API. This included UI/UX requirements, best practices, and how flows should operate:
